2019 BAMFSIES WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Don't miss the GeekNative article
Here's the BAMF Episode where the winners were announced:

Gamer’s Choice Awards
1) The winner of the Gamer’s Choice Poll this year was Hit the Streets: Defend the Block from Orklord Games
2) The VERY close runner-up was Tiny Supers from Gallant Knight Games
3) 3rd place goes to City of Mist Core Bundle: Player’s Guide and MC Toolkit from Son of Oak Game Studio

Judges’ Spotlight Awards
JUDGES: Alice Peng and Brandon Powers – hosts of the Babies with Knives podcast.
1) Hit the Streets: Defend the Block
This game is quick to learn and fun for short campaigns. I especially loved the block generation, it takes the concept of interconnecting characters to another level.

2) Spectaculars from Scratchpad Publishing
The modular “Mad Libs” approach to roleplaying “Your Comic Book” in this game can really get your group started. Even if you just use this game’s content to jumpstart your superhero campaign, there are lots of elements to experiment with. Honestly, I’m looking at using it as a character and world building tool.

3) Tiny Supers
In this modern age of quick to learn and play games, Tiny Supers is a quick read and go system. They provide you a number of settings to inspire as well.

JUDGE: Walt Robillard – Owner of Hazard Studios
1) Survive This: Vigilante City – Superhero Team UP By Bloat Games
The main series of these books build upon the author’s love of 1990’s animated superhero shows and this book takes that admiration and sings it from the top of a skyscaper (shrouded in shadows and lightning of course). With new content to support the original game (gear, vehicles, skills, etc) and a host of goodies to round out your characters (Such as building and stocking the perfect team crash pad), this book ratchets the original to a new level. All this hits even before the blocks on how to build a kick butt team and get them into action. Fun book for a fun game.

2) Survive This: Vigilante City – Into the Sewers By Bloat Games
If you loved reading the comics or watching the shows of the radioactive anthropomorphic super heroes from back in the day, this supplement for Survive This: Vigilante City is for you. Mutations, animal types, and sewer hazards oh my!

Get this book and bask in the radioactive glory!

JUDGE: Alexander Thomas – Novelist and RPG Freelancer with Green Ronin
1) The 3D Print It line from HAZARD Studio/New Millennium Games
They’ve come out with a number of terrain designs that are compatible with 3-D printers. What’s great about these is that they are specifically for the super hero genre, something that is woefully underserved in the terrain piece department. I think these first few products are a great start for the company and I can’t wait to see them branch out into larger pieces in the future.

Congratulations to all the winners.

Gamer's Choice Award

The winner of the Gamers' Choice Poll this year was Mutants & Masterminds Basic Hero's Handbook from Green Ronin

2nd Place- & very close runner up: Sigmata – This Signal Kills Fascists by Land of NOP LLC

Judge’s Spotlight Awards

Steve Kenson: SIGMATA: This Signal Kills Fascists

My decision for Judge’s Choice this year was both a challenging and an easy one. Challenging because of my need to recuse myself from any product or line I was involved with directly (although I’d be remiss not to point out the fantastic job developer Crystal Frasier has done with the Basic Hero’s Handbook for Mutants & Masterminds).

Also challenging because of the number of hotly anticipated Kickstarted superhero games that just aren’t out yet, like Champions Now, Trinity Continuum: Æon, Trinity Continuum: Aberrant, and Spectaculars (all sure to make the BAMFsies super-interesting next year).

Easy because Chad Walker’s SIGMATA: This Signal Kills Fascists exists. SIGMATA is a break-out roleplaying game in terms of theme, design, production … pretty much all marks. It presents a sweeping vision of an alternate (and yet hauntingly familiar) fascist American Regime and the super-powered Resistance fighting against it.

In particular is “the Signal,” a carrier-wave that sparks super-human powers in certain people (called Receivers) giving them the power to fight back against the Regime and to protect other insurgents doing the same. The Signal is fragile and temporary, however, and even Receivers have down-time when they are vulnerable and all-too human. SIGMATA more than earns its various content warnings, as it takes a mature and measured look at the concepts of fascism, authoritarianism, rebellion, and ethical insurgency.

Jacob Blackmon: Basic Hero’s Handbook for Mutants & Masterminds

My pick for the BAMFsies this year is the Mutants and Masterminds Third Edition Basic Heroes Handbook by Green Ronin Publishing.

When producing a roleplaying game in this day and age, one must consider the audience that it is aimed to attract. Large books with tons of complicated rules are nice for the experienced gamer who has had years to absorb said rules. But as the scope of tabletop RPGs is changing to include casual and novice players -- indeed a more family-friendly audience -- a company must be willing to produce a book that is able to be read and understood by a novice. Those who are totally unfamiliar with an RPG game might not want to read hundreds of pages of a book just to play. They will instead turn to a board game or (worse yet) a video game to find their entertainment.

This is where I have to applaud Green Ronin Publishing for their production of the M&M Basic Heroes Handbook. It is all the same rules as one will find in the standard M&M Heroes Handbook, but it is simply rephrased and formatted in such a way that a brand new player to a roleplaying game can pick up the book and read it to learn and play.

My congratulations to Crystal Frasier and Steve Kenson for this new addition to the Mutants and Masterminds RPG legacy. I look forward to meeting all the new M&M players this book will bring to the tables.

John McMullen: Capers RPG

Best for me was Capers, from Nerdburger Games. It was a mashup that I didn't expect to like (I'm rather fussy about the mashups I like) but the powers system and the resolution mechanics work very nicely for me. It's complete and evocative, and has very little fat on it. If I had to take just one thing from 2018, it would be Capers.

Walt Robillard: Survive this: Vigilante City - Free Sneak Preview

Survive this: Vigilante City by Bloat Games is a dynamic reskinning of the OSR rules. The game was kickstarted successfully and a preview document was kicked out so that non-backers could take a look. One part Batman the Animated series, one part TMNT, this game brings the love of 90’s animation to the game table. With added rules like the Survival Stat and amazing art, this game is the superhero romp you didn’t know you needed!
